Verse 7

KJV If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

ASV If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door: and unto thee shall be its desire, but do thou rule over it.

WEB If you do well, won’t it be lifted up? If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”

YLT Is there not, if thou dost well, acceptance? and if thou dost not well, at the opening a sin-offering is crouching, and unto thee its desire, and thou rulest over it.'

Verse 10

KJV And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.

WEB Yahweh said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground.

Verse 11

KJV And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;

ASV And now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to receive thy brother`s blood from thy hand;

WEB Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

YLT and now, cursed <FI>art<Fi> thou from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive the blood of thy brother from thy hand;

DRB Now therefore cursed shalt thou be upon the earth, which hath opened her mouth and received the blood of thy brother at thy hand.

Verse 12

KJV When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

ASV when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.

WEB From now on, when you till the ground, it won’t yield its strength to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.”

YLT when thou tillest the ground, it doth not add to give its strength to thee--a wanderer, even a trembling one, thou art in the earth.'

KJV And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

Verse 14

KJV Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

ASV Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the ground; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it will come to pass, that whosoever findeth me will slay me.

WEB Behold, you have driven me out today from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. Whoever finds me will kill me.”

Verse 15

KJV And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

ASV And Jehovah said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And Jehovah appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.

WEB Yahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Yahweh appointed a sign for Cain, so that anyone finding him would not strike him.

YLT And Jehovah saith to him, `Therefore--of any slayer of Cain sevenfold it is required;' and Jehovah setteth to Cain a token that none finding him doth slay him.

DRB And the Lord said to him: No, it shall not so be: but whosoever shall kill Cain, shall be punished sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, that whosoever found him should not kill him.

KJV And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

KJV If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

WEB If Cain will be avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times.”

YLT For sevenfold is required for Cain, And for Lamech seventy and sevenfold.'

WEB Adam knew his wife again. She gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, saying, “for God has given me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
