Passage
Then he said to Him, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here.
Then he said to Him, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here.
Exodus 33:13 So now, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight. See also, that this nation is Your people.”
Exodus 33:14 And He said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.”
Exodus 33:15 Then he said to Him, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here.
Exodus 33:16 Indeed, how then can it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not by Your going with us, so that we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the other people who are upon the face of the earth?”
Exodus 33:17 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “I will also do this thing of which you have spoken; for you have found favor in My sight, and I have known you by name.”
The verse centers on "said", "presence", "does", "lead", and "here". It is saying that the verse draws attention to "said" and "presence", so its meaning should be read from those terms before moving to application.
The nearby context moves from verse 14's "And He said My presence shall go..." into verse 16's "Indeed how then can it be known...", so "said" and "presence" belong inside that flow. In Exodus context, the local focus is covenant, worship, and faithfulness.
A plain takeaway is to answer the verse's own emphasis on "said" and "presence" with trust shaped by these words, not by a vague optimism outside the passage.
