Hebrews 4:9 (LSB)

Passage

So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

Nearby Context

Hebrews 4:7 He again determines a certain day, “Today,” saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before, “Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.”

Hebrews 4:8 For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that.

Hebrews 4:9 So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

Hebrews 4:10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.

Hebrews 4:11 Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall into the same example of disobedience.

Study Lenses

The verse centers on "remains", "sabbath", "rest", and "people". It is saying that the verse draws attention to "remains" and "sabbath", so its meaning should be read from those terms before moving to application.

The nearby context moves from verse 8's "For if Joshua had given them rest..." into verse 10's "For the one who has entered His...", so "remains" and "sabbath" belong inside that flow. In Hebrews context, the local focus is Christ, faith, and discipleship.

A plain takeaway is to answer the verse's own emphasis on "remains" and "sabbath" with trust shaped by these words, not by a vague optimism outside the passage.
