Chapter Text

47:1 That which came as the word of Yahweh to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck down Gaza.

47:2 Thus says Yahweh: “Behold, waters are going to rise from the north And become an overflowing torrent, And overflow the land as well as its fullness, The city and those who inhabit it; And the men will cry out, And every inhabitant of the land will wail.

47:3 Because of the noise of the galloping hoofs of his valiant steeds, The quaking of his chariots, and the tumult of his wheels, The fathers have not turned back for their children, Because of the limpness of their hands,

47:4 On account of the day that is coming To destroy all the Philistines, To cut off from Tyre and Sidon Every ally that is left; For Yahweh is going to destroy the Philistines, The remnant of the coastland of Caphtor.

47:5 Baldness has come upon Gaza; Ashkelon has been ruined. O remnant of their valley, How long will you gash yourself?

47:6 Ah, sword of Yahweh, How long will you not be quiet? Withdraw into your sheath; Be at rest and stay still.

47:7 How can it be quiet? Yahweh has given it a command; Against Ashkelon and against the seacoast— There He has assigned it.”

The verse centers on "came", "word", "yahweh", "jeremiah", "prophet", "concerning", "philistines", and "before". It is saying that the verse draws attention to "came" and "word", so its meaning should be read from those terms before moving to application.

The local LSB text gives this verse as the immediate unit, so "came" and "word" carries the first interpretive weight. In Jeremiah context, the local focus is covenant, worship, and faithfulness.

A plain takeaway is to answer the verse's own emphasis on "came" and "word" with trust shaped by these words, not by a vague optimism outside the passage.
