Nearby Context

Mark 10:32 And they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him:

Mark 10:33 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles.

Mark 10:34 And they will mock Him and spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.”

Mark 10:35 Then James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus, saying to Him, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.”

Mark 10:36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

Study Lenses

The verse centers on "mock", "spit", "flog", "kill", "three", "days", "later", and "rise". It is saying that the verse draws attention to "mock" and "spit", so its meaning should be read from those terms before moving to application.

The nearby context moves from verse 33's "Behold we are going up to Jerusalem..." into verse 35's "Then James and John the two sons...", so "mock" and "spit" belong inside that flow. In Mark context, the local focus is Christ, faith, and discipleship.

A plain takeaway is to answer the verse's own emphasis on "mock" and "spit" with trust shaped by these words, not by a vague optimism outside the passage.
