Study Lenses

The verse centers on "mount", "zion--that", "desolate", "foxes", and "gone". It is saying that the verse draws attention to "mount" and "zion--that", so its meaning should be read from those terms before moving to application.

The nearby context moves from verse 17's "For this hath our heart been sick..." into verse 19's "Thou O Jehovah to the age remainest...", so "mount" and "zion--that" belong inside that flow. In Lamentations context, the local focus is covenant, worship, and faithfulness.

A plain takeaway is to answer the verse's own emphasis on "mount" and "zion--that" with trust shaped by these words, not by a vague optimism outside the passage.
