Chapter Text

132:1 A Song of Ascents. Remember, O Yahweh, on David’s behalf, All his affliction;

132:2 How he swore to Yahweh And vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob,

132:3 “Surely I will not come into my house, Nor lie in the comfort of my bed;

132:4 I will not give sleep to my eyes Or slumber to my eyelids,

132:5 Until I find a place for Yahweh, A dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

132:6 Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah, We found it in the fields of Jaar.

132:7 Let us come into His dwelling place; Let us worship at the footstool of His feet.

132:8 Arise, O Yahweh, to Your resting place, You and the ark of Your strength.

132:9 Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness, And let Your holy ones sing for joy.

132:10 For the sake of David Your servant, Do not turn away the face of Your anointed.

132:11 Yahweh has sworn to David A truth from which He will not turn back: “Of the fruit of your body I will set upon your throne.

132:12 If your sons keep My covenant And My testimony which I will teach them, Their sons also shall sit upon your throne forever.”

132:13 For Yahweh has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His habitation.

132:14 “This is My resting place forever; Here I will inhabit, for I have desired it.

132:15 I will abundantly bless her provision; I will satisfy her needy with bread.

132:16 Her priests also I will clothe with salvation, And her holy ones will sing loudly for joy.

132:17 There I will cause the horn of David to spring up; I have prepared a lamp for Mine anointed.

132:18 His enemies I will clothe with shame, But upon him, his crown shall blossom.”

The verse centers on "song", "ascents", "remember", "yahweh", "david", "behalf", "affliction", and "swore". It is saying that the verse draws attention to "song" and "ascents", so its meaning should be read from those terms before moving to application.

The local LSB text gives this verse as the immediate unit, so "song" and "ascents" carries the first interpretive weight. In Psalms context, the local focus is worship, trust, the LORD's kingship, and covenant mercy.

A plain takeaway is to answer the verse's own emphasis on "song" and "ascents" with trust shaped by these words, not by a vague optimism outside the passage.
