Chapter Text

66:1 For the choir director. A Song. A Psalm. Make a loud shout to God, all the earth;

66:2 Sing praise for the glory of His name; Establish His praise as glorious.

66:3 Say to God, “How fearsome are Your works! Because of the abundance of Your strength Your enemies will cower before You.

66:4 All the earth will worship You, And will sing praises to You; They will sing praises to Your name.” Selah.

66:5 Come and see the works of God, Who is fearsome in His deeds toward the sons of men.

66:6 He turned the sea into dry land; They passed through the river on foot; There let us be glad in Him!

66:7 He rules by His might forever; His eyes keep watch on the nations; Let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah.

66:8 Bless our God, O peoples, And make the sound of His praise heard,

66:9 Who establishes us among the living And does not allow our feet to stumble.

66:10 For You have tested us, O God; You have refined us as silver is refined.

66:11 You brought us into the net; You established an oppressive burden upon our loins.

66:12 You made men ride over our heads; We went through fire and through water, Yet You brought us out into a place of abundance.

66:13 I shall come into Your house with burnt offerings; I shall pay You my vows,

66:14 Which my lips uttered And my mouth spoke when I was in distress.

66:15 I shall offer to You burnt offerings of fat beasts, With the smoke of rams; I shall make an offering of bulls with male goats. Selah.

66:16 Come and hear, all who fear God, And I will recount what He has done for my soul.

66:17 I called out to Him with my mouth, And He was exalted with my tongue.

66:18 If I see wickedness in my heart, The Lord will not hear;

66:19 But certainly God has heard; He has given heed to the voice of my prayer.

66:20 Blessed be God, Who has not turned away my prayer Nor His lovingkindness from me.

The verse centers on "called", "choir", "director", "song", "psalm", "make", "loud", and "shout". It is saying that the verse draws attention to "called" and "choir", so its meaning should be read from those terms before moving to application.

The local LSB text gives this verse as the immediate unit, so "called" and "choir" carries the first interpretive weight. In Psalms context, the local focus is worship, trust, the LORD's kingship, and covenant mercy.

A plain takeaway is to answer the verse's own emphasis on "called" and "choir" with trust shaped by these words, not by a vague optimism outside the passage.
